Pictures of space via NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day. The pictures are accompanied by brief explanations written by astronomers. Below is an example of the kind of thing that makes you feel incredibly small and useless. On top of the near-crippling awe that these photos inspire, we are also informed of the existence of a mysterious dark energy. The presence of which only serves to expand and preserve the universe. It's half comforting, half terrifying.

"Explanation: This tiny ball provides evidence that the universe will expand forever. Measuring slightly over one tenth of a millimeter, the ball moves toward a smooth plate in response to energy fluctuations in the vacuum of empty space. The attraction is known as the Casimir Effect, named for its discoverer, who, 50 years ago, was trying to understand why fluids like mayonnaise move so slowly. I recently saw a retrospective of Dan Graham's work at the Walker in Minneapolis and thought I'd share a link to an interesting interview with him by Museo Magazine. In it, he denounces Maurizio Cattelan's work as "90s cynical". An interesting accusation considering his work could certainly be written off as a precious collection of "60s idealism". I happen to identify strongly with both schools of thought.

If you're unfamiliar with Graham's work, there's a short preview of his seminal work, "Rock My Religion" on youtube. The real deal is over an hour long.

You might find these photos a little intense so early in the morning, but this photograph series by George Krause was too good not to share. He apparently started the series in 1963 while on assignment in Mexico for a Sports Illustrated feature on boxing.

High contrast black and white photographs compliment the high contrast of beauty and terror present in each piece. They remind me a lot of the time I spent in Lourdes on my way to the next Tour de France stage. I don't happen to affiliate myself with any religion, but it was definitely an experience I won't ever forget.

I'm not sure what it is about them, but I just love photographs of modern infrastructure. Perhaps it stems from my childhood inheritance of a million Wallpaper* magazines leftover by my older siblings after they moved out. Or perhaps it stems from my general disgust and subsequent fascination with all things relating to humankind's supposed dominance over nature. Either way, these photos have a real gravity to them and I think they nicely capture the sprawling nature of human civilization as well as its (inherent?) (ironic?) beauty.

You see, it's typical for me to consume booze while I'm on holiday, so I'm going to blame my hypocritical rant (see below) on that. I know some of you (siblings, mostly) probably cried foul about the antler/animal skeleton bit. Exhibit A. Exhibit B. Exhibit C. And so on.

However, you should know by now that I always exempt myself from my own judgmental sneers! I am so clearly above it all!

LAZY SUMMER

You'll notice that I have refrained from using my usual Sunday Songs segment today; a segment which I employ in order to avoid posting actual significant content. You may have also noticed that this is my first post in quite some time. I have been absent from the internet void for two reasons:

1) It's summertime, and I've been lingering on any patio, beach, or park bench that I have access to.

2) The internet is boring. Or at least, I am entirely bored with most of the art, photography, and fashion showcased therein.

Antlers used in home decor. Rose-tinted photographs of suspended balloons. The fashionable revival of 90's day-shift hooker wear. Bloody FACEBOOK. I realize it's all relative and everyone has different tastes, but some things just WILL NOT DIE. Can we move on now? Pretty please?

I promise I only get cranky like this most of the time, not all of the time.

Are these even real? Bas Princen aims to create landscapes which "can only exist in a camera" and utilizes natural and urban architechture to construct his visions. Trained in architechture as well as photography, Princen is well versed in merging aesthetic design with utility. As such, his completed compositions seem to blur the lines between what is natural and what is man-made, leading to questions about human purpose, human impact, and natural history.

They're pretty mindblowing to look at.

I discovered these photos by James Pomerantz on Beautiful/Decay, a blog which never fails to inspire.

The pictures were taken in Mexico at the site of a natural sinkhole which connects to a subterranean body of water. Ancient Mayans used the cenote as a source for fresh water and also believed that it was a portal to the afterlife.

Pomerantz says that the caves are not actually as dark as they appear in the photos, but that he intentionally isolates the sunshine in order to heighten the sense of isolation and mysticism.

I love the idea behind these photos. This kind of project could be put to highly effective use here in Winnipeg, where the most beautiful old downtown architechture has been degraded to the point of housing nothing more than Giant Tiger discount outlets or worse yet, nothing.

Chaize returns to the same stretch of Portuguese coastline to take each new photograph with the expectation that each new photo will either aid or further confuse his understanding of the space, its meaning, and its personal significance to him.

The picture above is of Laika, the first living creature in space. She died what was probably a very painful death after overheating occured in the vessel shortly after it entered space.

Multi-coloured illustrations by Mark Whalen AKA Kill Pixie that I can only assume were inspired by hundreds and thousands AKA coloured sprinkles.

I think my favourite part about these drawings is their composition. While they appear at first glance to be completely nonsensical and seizure-inducing, they're actually perfectly symmetrical and calculated.
